THE Department of Agriculture and Agrifood is recommending all poultry farms in the country to use the high-technology close house system to improve bio security measures as well as productivity of chicken to maintain full self-sufficient supply of chicken in the country.
The system was launched yesterday by the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Hajah Hasnah binti Haji Ibrahim.
One of the local farms, Haji Emran Agricultural farm under the RIZA Group, took up the initiative. Located at the agriculture development area in Kg Kulapis, Hj Emran Agricultural Farm started its operation in July 1993 and became one of the subsidiaries of RIZA Group on July 4, 2013. In September 2013, the farm introduced the high technology close house system.
Poultry farming with this system brings higher productivity as it can accommodate 20,000 chickens compared to the conventional chicken house that can only accommodate 5,000 chickens. This is due to the temperature control that will allow more chickens to be breed within the close house. Furthermore, it will open up opportunities for bigger market and export as disease control is improved and the quality of the products guaranteed.
According to Pg Hj Haris bin Pg Hj Duraman, the Managing Director of RIZA Group who is also the Manager of Haji Emran Agricultural Farm, “The objective of the project is to support the initiative of the government in fulfilling the need of self-sufficiency in food security for the people and also to encourage other ‘bumiputera’ to venture into their own business.”
He added, “The move to introduce the close house system is the first phase of the long-term plan of the company, with the main aim being further expanding and developing the business from time to time to achieve bigger productivity of chicken to fulfil the demand of the people in the country as well as for export.”
Also present at the ceremony were Dayang Hajah Aidah binti Hj Mohd Hanifah, the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood and other officials.
