CHUNG CHING Middle School and the Chung Ching Primary School recently celebrated their 76th anniversary. More than 700 students, teachers and parents who attended the celebration were entertained by lively performances of students.
The guest of honour at the event Pehin Bendahari Cina Dato Paduka Onn Siew Siong, the President of the Belait Chamber of Commerce, said in his speech, “Chung Ching has been established for 76 years and along the way it has strived to overcome difficulties. This has been accurately illustrated with the board of directors’ contribution to upgrade the facilities with the aspiration of becoming one of the best Chinese schools in Brunei to cultivate quality individuals for the nation and society.”
He said that the fast modern life leaves only night time for family and friends to be together but this time is often invested in television programmes or video games thus leading to less interaction with family members.
The guest of honour expressed hope that teachers, particularly the ones from China, take some time out during lessons to teach students about the Chinese culture. He said that this would not just help students learn filial piety (to respect one’s elders and ancestors), but would also make them more caring towards younger ones, polite towards others, make them distinguish right from wrong as well as help them in distancing from drugs and thus make them good citizens.
Special guest, Zheng Xianglin, the Ambassodor of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam, in his speech said, “Chinese culture is profound, stretching for thousands of years. China and Brunei have developed healthy ties with the exchanging, expanding and deepening of the pragmatic cooperation in various areas. Learning and mastering the Chinese language and accumulation of the outstanding Chinese cultural elements can become the dominant resource to create a competitive society in the future.”
He added that, “We have recently applied for 60,000 yuan worth of Chinese books and audio-visual products with the objective of developing more talented students and fostering better relationship between China and Brunei.”
