IT IS that time of the year when the Chinese community will hold their well-known open houses as a way to celebrate Chinese New Year with their family and friends.
Pehin Kapitan China Kornia Diraja Dato Paduka Lau Ah Kok held an open house at his residence in Kg Manggis, Jalan Muara. Various state officials, ambassadors and high commissioners were among those who attended the open house.
It is a tradition for the Chinese community to present their guests with red packets, or more commonly known as ‘ang pow’, as the colour red symbolises good luck.
Whenever a red packet is presented, it must be accompanied by a saying “Gong Hee Fatt Cai” which translates to “wishing you to be prosperous in the coming year”.
A Chinese open house is in many ways similar to a Hari Raya open house, as both open houses will serve guests drinks, food and snacks while the signature Mandarin oranges would be on the table.
