BEIJING (dpa) – China on Saturday criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to a disputed zone along the mutual border.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called the visit a blow to efforts to resolve and control disputes over competing territorial claims that have dragged on for several decades.
“The Chinese government has never recognised the ‘Arunachal Pradesh,’” Hua said, in reference to the Indian state whose anniversary Modi celebrated on Friday.
She said China remains firm in its claims to disputed areas on the eastern part of the China-India border.
“We demand the Indian side not to take any action that may complicate the border issue before its resolution so as to maintain the sound momentum in the growth of bilateral relations,” Hua said.
India declared Arunachal Pradesh a state in February 1987, a move that China called illegal and unilateral, Xinhua news agency said.
