THE HM Sultan’s 68th Birthday National Chess Championship 2014 ended on a high note on Sunday with several players contesting for the National Master title this year.
This year’s National Chess Championship was won by Pg Abdul Rahman PLW Yussof who scored 7.5 points out of nine games, runner-up was Pg Kamarunsalehin bin Pg Kamis with 7 points and in third place was Hj Baharuddin bin Hj Sulaiman with 6.5 points.
The championship was held from Oct 10-19 and organised according to FIDE rated rule. The event was organised by Brunei and Muara District organising committee of the Brunei Chess Federation and sponsored by Alif Technologies Sdn Bhd.
Pg Abdul Rahman, a veteran player who had won the National Master before was very thrilled on winning the title again. Early this year, he participated in the Asian Senior Chess Championship in Jordan and came in third.
According to the president of Brunei Chess Federation, Haji Zainal Abidin, the championship served to select players for the Sharjah Capital of Islamic Culture Individual Chess Championship from Nov 14-24.
The expenses for the trip will be sponsored by the Asian Chess Federation. Pg Kamarunsalehin Pg Kamis and Siti Nur Fatimah binti Hj Azahari have been selected to enter the Open and Female category of the tournament accompanied by National Coach Grandmaster Vakhidov Tahir.
