NEW DELHI (dpa) – A caption gaffe by India’s state-run Doordarshan television channel sparked derision on social media Thursday, just months after one of its employees was sacked for misnaming the Chinese president.
On its official Twitter feed Wednesday, Doordarshan showed a picture of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding over a meeting with party officials, with the caption, “Jingle all the way!!! … A man dressed as Santa Claus feeds monkeys ahead of Christmas.”
By the time the error had been corrected and a new caption added, the mistaken tweet had been retweeted hundreds of times.
“DDnews 2014 is not your year,” Twitter user Namita Handa said. In September, one of DDTV’s news anchors was sacked after referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping as “Eleven Jinping,” confusing his family name for Roman numerals.
