CANON has just launched the EOS 7D Mark II, successor to the award-winning EOS 7D which features an array of new functions and technology which will enable the user to rapidly track and focus on the desired subject, granting unprecedented accuracy when shooting fast-moving subjects.
Canon has also introduced three new lenses designed to address the needs of both professional and amateur photographers, which are, EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM third-generation super-telephoto Diffractive Optics (DO) lens, the lightweight EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM “pancake” wide-angle lens, and the versatile standard EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom lens, a press release stated.
“The Canon EOS 7D has a reputation of being a fast and powerful APS-C DSLR. This heritage continues in the EOS 7D Mark II, which raises the bar with a cutting-edge APS-C class sensor, delivering impeccable imagery and unparalleled performance.
“Meanwhile, the latest range of lenses reflects the evolving needs of the photography community. The EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM is ideal for professionals in the field who require a super-telephoto lens that is lightweight and portable, while the EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM and EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM are versatile yet lightweight lenses that deliver superior optical performance for amateur photographers,” said Donny Ling, Director of Imaging Communications Products Division, Canon Marketing Malaysia.
Through a new shutter and mirror mechanism, the EOS 7D Mark II achieves continuous shooting speeds of up to 10 fps.
With a fast burst rate, users can capture fast-moving subjects with precision and sharpness. Canon’s new EOS iTR (intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF system is also featured in the EOS 7D Mark II, which works together with the EOS iSA (intelligent Subject Analysis) to recognise and track a subject’s face and colour.
The EOS 7D Mark II is the first Canon DSLR to be equipped with both a 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 6 image processors.
This powerful combination provides the camera with low noise, high sensitivity and speedy processing for both still images and movies.
The EOS 7D Mark II also features enhanced video capabilities with a new Dual Pixel CMOS AF function, enabling high-speed phase-difference detection AF on the CMOS sensor plane.
This allows for extremely fast AF and smooth subject tracking in Live View and Movie Shooting mode, even with erratic changes in subject distance.
Movies can also be captured at Full HD resolution and a high ISO of 16,000 enables the camera to produce sharper videos, even in low light.
Cycles of flickering lights detected by the new EOS 7D Mark II are compensated accordingly for optimal exposure by only capturing shots at peak light volume which effectively eliminates any visible flickering. Improved High Dynamic Range (HDR) and multiple exposure functions now give users the creative advantage to create multiple-exposure shots within the camera.
The EOS 7D Mark II also features two quick control dials, a button to toggle major settings like ISO speeds with the dial and more, contributing to a total of 11 customisable controls.
Advanced users will be able to make full use of these controls to speed up their work process. The EOS 7D Mark II comes with double memory card slots – a CF and SD card slot as well as an inbuilt USB 3.0 Digital Terminal. Not only that, the EOS 7D Mark II has a tough but lightweight magnesium alloy body, with enhanced sealing over the external cover seams.
An optional BG-E16 battery grip caters to heavy-duty users who shoot for extended periods of time, featuring a multi-controller, as well as an AF area selection button to allow easy operation even when holding the camera in a vertical position.
Users may also opt for the optional Super Precision Matte type focusing screen, which helps frame sharp points of focus easily when using bright lenses with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or higher.
An optional Wireless File Transmitter, the WFT-E7 offers enhanced versatility when transferring data between the EOS 7D Mark II and a workstation. Supporting IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n network connections, it provides for reliable and faster wireless LAN transfers.
A successor to the EF400mm f/4 DO IS USM, the EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM is a professional lens that is particularly suited for wildlife and sports photographers.
This lens allows photographers to achieve the reach of a super-telephoto lens, while maintaining superior standards of mobility in the lens through a portable and lightweight form factor.
The EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM contains an improved IS unit that significantly enhances image stabilisation when the appropriate IS mode is selected.
IS Mode 1 is designed to shoot still subjects, while Mode 2 is designed to photograph action scenes that require frequent panning. IS Mode 3 is geared for subjects with unpredictable movements, such as soccer players.
Finally, an electromagnetic diaphragm with 9 aperture blades ensures smooth and circular ‘bokeh’ blurs.
When set in the Auto Focus, Power Focus and Manual Focus modes, Focus preset allows the user to set a desired focal distance and to recall the exact settings at any point with a simple turn of the playback ring.
The EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM is highly resistant to harsh environments. This is achieved through a fluorine coating on both the front and rear lens elements, which makes the lens dirt and oil-resistant while easier to clean. All rings and buttons are constructed with a dust and drip-proof structure, preventing dust and liquid from entering the sensitive interior of the lens.
The pancake EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM lens is significantly smaller than a kit lens, measuring 22.8mm in thickness (about a third in thickness in comparison to a kit lens) and weighing in at only 125g (approximately the same weight as a smart phone). The 24mm (35mm equivalent) focal length grants the EF-S24mm f/2.8 STM a natural wide-angle view, making it highly versatile for capturing everyday scenes. Its short minimum focal length of 0.16m and maximum magnification of 0.27x also makes it ideal for food photography and capturing small details.
The EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM has a range from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm telephoto suitable for users who enjoy capturing portrait shots, landscapes, and close-ups of distant subjects.
Image quality is preserved across the entire zoom range due to the use of two GMo (glass-molded) aspherical lenses. A UD lens corrects chromatic aberration to reduce color fringing to provide accurate, life-like colors. Finally, a 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm in combination with the IS functionality enables users to capture night scenes with natural and beautiful background blurs. Macro photography is also made possible.
The EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is the first EF lens to come equipped with a lead-screw type stepping motor (STM). It also features a full-time manual focus mechanism that allows for manual, minute focus adjustments. The motor is highly responsive, allowing for quick and smooth AF. It is also silent, making it ideal for movie capturing, especially when used with a Movie Servo AF-compatible camera.
