PERTH, Australia (dpa) – Canada earned a 2-0 scoreline to eliminate Italy from contention at the Hopman Cup on Thursday, as Eugenie Bouchard and Vasek Pospisil dominated in straight-set victories.
The result keeps the Canadians in the chase for a possible victory in their round-robin group.
In singles, world number six Bouchard defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4 while teammate Pospisil dispatched an out-of-sorts Fabio Fognini 6-0, 6-3.
If Bouchard and Pospisil win the mixed, they still have a shot at making the finals. But their fate will rest on the results of the Czech Republic-US tie to come. If the Americans win, the six-time champion at the mixed team competition will top the group. But a Czech victory could bode well for Canada, given various countback calculations under the event’s round-robin format.
But it’s all mathematics to the Canadians, who are more concerned with their tennis after finishing with a 2-1 record.
“I was talking to Vasek and we were trying to calculate it (the group standings) but it was too complicated,” said Bouchard.
“I just wanted to win and then let’s see what happens. We did our jobs so far. I think there’s a very small chance we’ll make finals but we’ll see.”
“I’ve won all three of my singles. I’ve been playing well this week,” Pospisil said after defeating Fognini in 59 minutes with 18 winners and six aces. “Now might be a good time though to win my first career mixed doubles matrch.”
