A NATIONWIDE cleaning campaign at 117 mosques, suraus and religious halls across the country was held yesterday to enliven the celebration of Islamic New Year 1436 Hijrah, which this year is themed ‘United in Upholding the Laws of Allah the Almighty.’
Five mosques became the centre of focus for the launch of the cleaning campaign, one of which was the Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Serusop.
Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs cum guest of honour Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar launched the campaign at the Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque.
The deputy minister joined nearly a hundred volunteers from government agencies, private sector and associations in the clean-up.
Earlier, the ceremony opened with recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa by Mosque Affairs Officer Mohd Amin bin Haji Salim, and was followed by welcoming remarks delivered by Mosque Affairs Acting Assistant Director Haji Amir Hisham bin Haji Masri.
He highlighted that mosques play an important role in developing Islam, and that the cleanliness, beauty of the building and surroundings of the mosque symbolise the spirit of Muslims in spreading Syiar Islam.
Duties and responsibilities in maintaining the cleanliness of the mosque do not fall on one party, but on everybody, he explained.
The event continued with a talk on ‘Importance of Clean Mosque’ by Dr Ustaz Haji Hambali bin Haji Jaili, Dean of Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) and was followed by the presentation of ‘wakaf’ of seven sets of Philips 50-inch LCD TV by Nazmi Textile Managing Director Nazeer Ahmed Zackariah.
The day also saw Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom and Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Abdul Aziz bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Umar planting trees.
The objectives of the event include inculcating a sense of love for the beauty and cleanliness of our mosques both inside and out; strengthening the spirit of ‘gotong-royong,’ and solidifying ties between mosque officers, Takmir mosque committee members and congregants and society.
