A NATIONWIDE mosque, surau and prayer hall cleaning campaign was held yesterday at 117 locations with the main focus centred on five mosques.
In the Brunei-Muara District, the campaign took place at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Silver Jubliee Mosque in Kampong Jangsak. The guests of honour were the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman and his wife, Datin Hajah Alimah binti Mohd Taib.
The event began with a mass Subuh prayer followed by a religious talk on the significance of the Islamic new year.
Acting Director of Mosque Affairs, Awang Haji Abdul Rajid bin Haji Mohd Salleh, in his speech explained the objective of the campaign, saying, “The cleaning campaign aims to instill and cultivate a caring attitude towards the beauty and cleanliness of mosques and their surroundings as well as inculcating a spirit of cooperation among the Mosque Committee, officials and the community.”
Maintaining the cleanliness at places of worship is a responsibility of all Muslims, he added.
The acting director also shared that the department is working in collaboration with the Building and Maintenance Section, and that it has contracted a number of companies for their cleaning services.
His speech was followed by a religious talk presented by Dr Haji Noralizam bin Haji Aliakbar, a religious officer at the Syariah Faculty of KUPU SB.
The minister then launched the campaign by unfurling a banner and hanging up cleanliness signboards at the mosque’s compound and planting a tree to commemorate the occasion.
This year, the committee wanted to highlight the importance of mosque cleanliness following various complaints from congregants and the community regarding their cleanliness.
“Thus, it is part of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ responsibility to create awareness in upholding the cleanliness of mosques, suraus and prayer halls in the country. What is most important about maintaining cleanliness of places of worship is that it is closely-related to the vision of being a Zikir nation.”
Meanwhile, the Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Serusop was visited by the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, as the guest of honour, while the Belait District saw the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Abd Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, visit the Zainab Mosque.
