A LOCAL who caused disruption to TelBru’s telephone services at four villages in Kampong Ayer recently was jailed for 24 months by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana Hj Abd Rahman took into account 39-year-old Permanent Resident Zulkarnain bin Baharum’s previous multiple convictions of theft with the latest in 2010.
The magistrate reiterated that the defendant’s issue with his family was not a reason to commit the offence and the sentence would be passed in the spirit of deterrence.
DPP Aiman Zakaria informed the court that the defendant melted off rubber casings on telephone cables, took the copper wires and sold them to scrap metal shops.
Police received a report on the failure of telephone disruption in Kg Tamoi Tengah, Kg Sungai Siamas, Kg Lurong Sekuna and Kg Peramu Bakut Siraja Muda in Kampong Ayer on November 20, which was suspected to be caused by telephone cable theft.Police found the cables missing from the TelBru Cabinet 004 in Kg Sg Bakut Pg Siraja Muda, Kampong Ayer.
The defendant was arrested following investigations and admitted he stole the cables during the early hours of November 19.
