THE school level winners of the BUBA Awards yesterday presented their entries at the British High Commission in front of a panel of three judges. The theme for the 2014/2015 BUBA Awards is ‘Sustainability’.
According a press release, six sixth form schools took part in the 2014 BUBA Awards Competition, namely, Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Meragang Sixth Form Centre, Katok Sixth Form Centre, Tutong Sixth Form Centre and Jerudong International School.
The judging panel consisted of Prosperity and Commercial Manager at the British High Commission, Delwin Keasberry, BUBA Chairman, Kimberly Tritton, and BUBA Vice Chairman, Jake Duffin. The students who presented their business plans to the judges were all first place winners at their individual schools.
According to Delwin Keasberry, the judges had 15 minutes with each school, in which the schools first gave a brief overview about their projects, and used the remainder of the time for informal Q&A sessions.
“The Q&A element was vital as it gave us a glimpse into how well the students understood their chosen topics. All in all, I am impressed as the students showed courage and delivered well. It is clear that the next generation does indeed possess the knowledge, creativity and innovation required to help Brunei diversify its economy,” he added.
Following the success of the previous awards, the BUBA membership discussed themes for 2015 and voted to determine the chosen idea.
The members wanted to change the focus of the awards from previous years to include an element of creativity, but to still be based around a theme relevant to Brunei, its future development and its place in the world. Given that ‘Sustainable Development’ and ‘Protection of the Natural Environment’ are parts of the ‘Vision 2035’, this was chosen as the overarching theme.
By doing this, it creates an opportunity for students to give their voice regarding issues within the country they care about.
The national winners of the 2014/2015 BUBA Awards Competition will be announced at a prize presentation event taking place tonight at Indera Samudra Grand Hall 4 at The Empire Hotel And Country Club.
