BASED on the instruction of the Health Services Department, Ministry of Health (MoH), the Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Board yesterday reiterated that it will continue to issue notices to food outlets urging them not to keep hot food in styrofoam containers.
Currently, the Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Board is distributing the notice to the food outlets under its jurisdiction. The notice, which does not carry a ban, is an advice to food outlets on the use of styrofoam containers. Instead the notice urges the use of alternative containers like ‘food grade’ containers to keep food, especially hot items. Other advice in the notice is against the re-use styrofoam containers. During this year’s Legislative Council Meeting, the Ministry of Education had urged primary school canteens in the country not to use styrofoam containers for selling of hot food and drinks to students, and instead, to use plastic containers.
The call was made by the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong at the 10th LegCo Meeting while responding to a question by YB Awang Haji Tahamit bin Haji Nudin on the matter of styrofoam use at food outlets.
