BRUNEI Darussalam’s National Under-15 team yesterday left for Taiwan to take part in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 qualifiers with the qualifying period set to be held from September 16 to 29.
The national under-15 team have been drawn in Group ‘F’ alongside hosts Taipei, North Korea, Hong Kong and Macau and will play all their games at the Fu Jen Catholic University Stadium in New Taipei City.
The 23-member strong team will be led by Morni bin Zakaria as manager and Stephen Ng as the head coach.
The national junior side will begin their campaign against Macau on September 16 before meeting Taipei on September 18.
Brunei will face North Korea on September 20 before completing their group stage play against Hong Kong on September 22.
The national under-15 team last featured in the competition in 2014 when they finished fourth in the five-team Group ‘H’ having managed a win and three losses in Vientiane, Laos.
The young Wasps produced a flying start to the campaign after registering an impressive 4-1 victory over footballing minnows Guam with Muhamad Syahmi bin Rashid bagging a hat-trick.
The most recent side created history after chalking their first-ever win in a 2-0 victory over Cambodia since the inception of the AFF Under-16 tournament in 2002.
The national under-15 team will also be having a warm-up match against Taipei Chelsea Academy today as part of their preparations.
“The Brunei under-15 team is looking forward to good performances in the Asian Football Confederation U16 Group ‘F’ qualifiers in Taipei,” said Stephen Ng.
“Our boys have been working hard in training after the last Asean Football Federation tournament in Thailand and are staying focus to play well in the upcoming four games in Taipei,” he continued.
The squad has four new additions – Sherzaman Hassan from Projek Ikan Pusu (PIP), Naqiu Nordin and Hidayat Affendi from Tabuan ‘B’ and Idzzaham Metali from Tabuan ‘C’.
Present to bid the team farewell at the Brunei International Airport were Haji Madli bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Acting Vice President of National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD); Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Acting General Secretary of NFABD and Yvon Avry, Technical Director of NFABD.
