THE annual Defence Policy Dialogue between Brunei Darussalam and the Republic of Singapore was held yesterday at the Joint Senior Officers’ Mess, Ministry of Defence, Singapore.
The dialogue was co-chaired by Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Azmansham bin Pengiran Haji Mohamad, Permanent Secretary (Defence Policy and Development), Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam, and Chan Yeng Kit, Permanent Secretary (Defence), Ministry of Defence, Republic of Singapore.
The Defence Policy Dialogue was established in 2009 with the aim of fostering defence cooperation through discussions, information sharing and exploring new areas of practical cooperation, particularly at the strategic level.
Yesterday’s dialogue covered a wide range of topics such as joint discussions on the regional security outlook and overview of the bilateral defence cooperation which included the possibility of conducting joint research in the areas of human performance and technology.
The co-chairs highlighted the importance of the dialogue in enhancing the good relationship between the two countries in areas of defence and military.
The co-chairs noted the continued cooperation in bilateral exercises such as ‘Exercise Airguard’ and ‘Exercise Maju Bersama’, both will be commemorating their 20th anniversary this year.
The dialogue also exchanged views on regional developments and major power engagements in Southeast Asia and current challenges such as the tensions in the Southern and East China Seas and the emerging concern over the Islamic State group.
Prior to the Defence Policy Dialogue, Colonel (Rtd) Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Azmansham paid a courtesy call on Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister of Defence, Republic of Singapore.
