THE Brunei National Boatrace Association (Perkebar) will be represented by the Brunei Darussalam Youth Scheme team for the coming Penang Dragon Boat Race Festival to be held at Teluk Bahang Dam, Penang on December 6 -7.
The Perkebar President Haji Haris bin Haji Ibrahim said the team consists of 28 participants including 24 paddlers, coach and team manager as well as two reserve paddlers.
He said these young paddlers have huge potential and participated in previous Brunei Darussalam Regatta in 2012, 2013 and in 2014 won first place in the youth category.
Earlier this year, they won first place in the youth international category in Sabah.
Currently, the team is undergoing intensive training under the watchful eyes of national coach Awg Haji Syahid Nuryasin. The team has been undergoing training since January at Damuan and Serasa Water Sports Complex in Serasa, Muara.
The team will be participating in four race categories namely – International Premier Open – 100m & 250m (22 racers), International Junior U23 Open 100m and 250m (12 racers), International Premier Open 2 x 250m Relay (12 racers) and International Junior U23 Open 2x250m Relay (12 racers). The team will leave for Penang on December 4.
Meanwhile, participants are requested to attend a time trial on Oct 18 at 8.30am to select the best at the Sports Medicine and Research Centre at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
The paddlers are ready to undergo talent introduction programme to be conducted by Coaching and Sports Development Unit of the Youth and Sports Department.
The Brunei National Boatrace Association hoped that the paddlers will become national paddlers to represent Brunei Darussalam at the SEA Games.
