MINISTER of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad bin Pengiran Hj Abdul Rahman yesterday reminded government scholars to safeguard the Bruneian identity which is pillared on the spirit of love for the monarch, religion, race and nation, otherwise summed up in two words – ‘Brunei Patriotism.’
“Brunei Patriotism is nothing new, having existed for the longest time. Brunei Patriotism cannot be traded, and is born from a deep awareness and desire to contribute to the nation,” the minister said.
He was speaking during a get-together with government scholarship students under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, who are set to start their undergraduate and postgraduate studies abroad.
The minister described the 68 scholars who showed up at the Centrepoint Hotel for the event as excellent students of Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Boys Secondary School and Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
Congratulating the students, the minister noted that scholarships are given with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and that they are entrusted to be fully dedicated to their studies.
He later stressed on the usefulness of information technology, before speaking of its negative influence, urging students to equip themselves with knowledge that can wall off negative influence.
In emphasising the importance of patriotism, the minister noted that if a country boasts highly educated people who lack the spirit of patriotism, the big hopes of development would not be achieved.
He later expressed hope the scholarship would ignite the spirit of patriotism among recipients and propel them to be successful in their studies.
