THE Civil Aviation Department, Ministry of Communications celebrated the International Civil Aviation Day yesterday at the Royal Brunei Recreational Club in Berakas.
The International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated every December 7 by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The theme for this year is ‘Cooperation in Global Aviation Progress’.
The guest of honour was the Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar.
This year also marked the 60th anniversary of Brunei’s involvement in the airlines industry since its first base was launched on November 15, 1954.
“This year’s theme reminds us of the importance of collaborating together in expanding the air transport sectors, and the airlines industry as a whole. The implementation may be carried out through strategic planning in addressing the challenges faced,” the guest of honour said in his opening speech.
He also shared the journey in which the civil aviation has made tremendous achievements throughout the 60 years including the airfield lighting system upgrades, installation of Instrument Landing System (ILS), traffic control systems that have essential radars, and the localisation of employees.
“The success and growth of the airline industry that we have achieved is not only from the results of individual efforts but more from a ‘collective effort’ of all agencies concerned in this industry,” added the minister.
The minister also thanked the Royal Brunei Police Force, Ministry of Defence, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Immigration and National Registration Department, all cargo handlers of Brunei International Air Cargo Centre (BIACC), and respective agencies involved in the airlines industry.
