BRUNEI Darussalam’s under-23 national team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Myanmar in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 qualifiers at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar last night.

Myanmar’s Nyein Chan Aung bagged a brace in the 20th and 61st minute while Naing Lin Tun also netted on the brink of half-time.

Brunei under-23s were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Mohd Asnawi Syazni was given marching orders in injury time of the first half.

The result confirmed their elimination from the AFC under-23 qualifying tournament while the designated hosts are in a good position to qualify pending their final game against Australia.

The youthful Wasps have not scored a single goal in the last two matches but they remain in third position in Group ‘F’.

Brunei will next play Singapore, who were trounced 7-0 by current leaders Australia in the final group game on July 23 with a point enough to secure third place.

Australia currently lead the group with a maximum six points via a superior goal difference while Vietnam stay second.

The group winners will advance to the tournament proper next year while the team who could not seal top spot will have to wait as one of the best runners-up in the qualifying tournament.
