BRUNEI Darussalam fell to a 4-2 defeat in the hands of Timor Leste in the opening game of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup qualifiers at the National Sports Complex in Vientiane, Laos, yesterday.
Brunei had bounced back from a goal down to establish a 2-1 lead heading into the interval but Timor Leste turned the table with two late goals to collect all three points.
Murilo de Almeida’s hat-trick and a late strike by Patrick Fabiano on his debut gave the Wasps a miserable start to their campaign.
Murilo’s sixth minute lead was cancelled out by Adi Said before Awangku Fakharrazi made it 2-1 in the Wasps favour in the 40th minute.
Murilo muscled past two defenders to net his second of the game in the 72nd minute before completing his hat-trick (81st).
The Timor Leste forward has now scored six goals in his last five appearances and comfortably leads the scoring charts with three goals in this year’s AFF Suzuki Cup qualifying.
Fabiano capped a fine debut for his country with a goal a minute before the end of normal time to make it 4-2.
The Wasps face Laos next on October 14, which is currently managed by former Brunei national team coach David Booth.
