TWENTY students from two institutes yesterday left for Manila, Philippines, for the Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Asia competition set to run from February 26 to March 1.
During a send-off ceremony held at the Brunei International Airport, the students heard a safety briefing. Following this was a Doa Selamat recitation.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education cum guest of honour Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz later handed over the national flag to the delegation head, Pengiran Haji Sofhrin bin Pengiran Haji Ibrahim from Mechanical Training Centre.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Pengiran Haji Sofhrin said he felt honoured to have been chosen to represent Brunei in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2015, adding that he hopes the contingent will do the country proud.
Representing Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) are teams GenNext Harapan and GenNext Pejuang, while Mechanical Training Centre (PLM) is represented by teams PLM Alpha 4 and PLM Alpha 7.
Among the many notable highlights by the contingent is Brunei’s first prototype hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, put forward by team GenNext Pejuang from UBD.
This year also features the first female drivers from three of the four teams.
