WITH less than three weeks before Brunei Darussalam host the Borneo City Cup 2014, the Brunei national basketball team currently is shaping up to be a championship team under the guidance of newly-appointed national basketball coach Nomar Angeles Isla.
It will be the first real test for coach Nomar who was appointed by the Brunei Basketball Association in July.
The team players list has been confirmed following intense selection process and they are Darren Chai, Ammar Syaifq Ikram, Simon Chong, Soon Kian Leong, Samuel Jong, Khoo Chin Kai, Muhd Masduqi Hj Hussin, Lim Liang Wei, Jon Lee, Gideon Fong, Lim Aik Hock, Liew Kok Fui and Kevin Tan.
Coach Nomar during a practice yesterday with the team said: “Dreaming is free. Why not go for the champion. We are not playing for third or fourth place.”
“We are looking forward to play against the teams in Borneo and exceed the expectation. People may not have faith in our team but I believe that we can come up with a surprise.”
Speaking on the preparation, he said: “The team is really getting into shape and the system that I want to run. I believe that we have a good selection of players. Although the players are not very tall, we can compensate with smart basketball play. ”
He further explained “smart basketball play is organised defence. We are training every day to build up player’s stamina as well as organised offence as well as defensive play.”
Before the start of the tournament, he revealed the team will also be taking part in tune-up games and will head to Miri next weekend for a friendly game.
The national basketball coach said “preparation is the vital key to success although we have a short time before the competition starts.”
The upcoming Borneo City Cup 2014 to be hosted by Brunei Darussalam from Oct 24-26 will see teams from Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Labuan participating in the competition.
