BESIDES sending its sepak takraw team, Brunei Darussalam will for the first time compete in petanque at the 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand from Nov 12-27.
The Brunei contingent led by chef-de-mission Rosmadee Hj Md Daud left for Phuket yesterday following a flag handing-over ceremony officiated by Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports at the Brunei International Airport.
Four national petanque athletes are in the contingent – Mohd Abdillah bin Tamin, Hj Abdul Karim bin Hj Ahmad, Hj Mat Rasli bin Hj Ahmad and Masli bin Hj Mod Said.
The sepak takraw team consist of Mohd Shukri bin Jaineh, Mohd Hafizzuddin bin Jamaludin, Ismail Ang, Nir Alimin bin Sungoh, Jamaludin bin Hj Marzi and Abdul Amin bin Mahari.
The chef-de-mission Rosmadee Hj Md Daud in an interview said: “We are hoping to obtain good results in the tournament and we will try our best to achieve that.”
He also revealed that this is the fourth time that Brunei have competed in the Asian Beach Games and in the previous outing the sepak takraw team managed to secure a bronze medal.
Petanque team manager Hj Rosmin bin Hj Mohd Hassan disclosed that his players are ready to give their opponents a run for their money.
“We are sending our silver medallist team at the Pan Pacific petanque competition held in the Philippines middle of this year. I personally felt that we can challenge the teams in the Asian Beach Games who have also competed in the Pan Pacific tournament.
“We will do our best to achieve our target of qualifying for the semifinals,” Hj Rosmin added.
After the flag handing-over ceremony, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina also bid good luck and gave some advice to the athletes.
