LONDON (dpa) – A British couple turned to crowd-funding to help pay a pending 200,000-dollar hospital bill after their baby was born 11-weeks early while they were on holiday in New York.
On Friday, gym instructors Katie Amos, 30, and Lee Johnston, 29, had donations of nearly 10,000 dollars from 691 people who were touched by their story on social media.
Dax, who weighed just 1.3 kilogrammes when he was born December 28, is in a crib for premature babies in a Manhattan hospital and may not be able to leave hospital and fly home until March.
They had travel insurance but the couple fear their coverage will not run to the full hospital bill and their living expenses in New York.
They had only expected to be away for four days and had medical clearance for their flight.
After friends in Britain put out a call for help, donations have come in from as far as New Zealand.
American Kerry Hecht said in a post on their fundraising site that a trip to Britain ended with a hospital visit.
