OFFENBACH, Germany (dpa) – Next year’s handbag collections in top European stores will have a distinctly summer feel with floral patterns and butterflies reflecting a nostalgic look, trend scouts predict.
“Handbags are going to have a laid-back feel but look smart at the same time,” says leather fashion expert Martin Wuttke. He also thinks we are going to see less changes in fashion than in the past. “We will see a slowdown.”
Wuttke thinks handbag fashion will last longer than just one season.
When it comes to colours and shape, next year’s handbags will follow classic rules. Sand tones, beige and pastel in contrast with strong yellow-green as well as black and blue. Grey will also be a feature in all possible shades.
“You won’t go wrong with that colour,” says Wuttke.
Designers have opted for classic shapes such as the tried and tested trapezium form. Clutch bags with almost kitschy looking floral decoration and huge pearls will also feature in 2015. A touch of the exotic will come in the shape of frills and ethno designs.
Next year’s bags will dangle from long straps and handles.
It won’t all be pure glamour, though, and little rucksacks will remain popular, both for men and women.Designers are also targeting men with pimped-up sports bags and trendy looking bags for the city.
The vegan trend in handbags has hardly grown at all. For many years, only a tiny fraction of bags has in fact been made from animal products such as leather.
The vast majority of bags are made from textiles and synthetics, so vegans have little to worry about.
While many tourists ogle expensive luxury brands, most Europeans like to play with the bling in the shops but end up opting for bags in the lower price segment of between 10 and 15 dollars.
“Shoppers do tend to choose the cheaper product when it actually comes to paying,” says Manfred Junkert from Germany’s Association of Shoe and Leather Product Makers.
Most bags offered in Europe are made in China, Italy and Vietnam.
Almost half of the 26 million bags imported into the EU this year came from China alone.
