THE Health Promotion Centre, Ministry of Health in collaboration with The Brunei Cancer Centre (TBCC) and Laneige Brunei Darussalam is currently holding a five-day Breast Cancer Awareness campaign at the Atrium of The Mall in Gadong.
The campaign, held in conjunction with the Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the theme ‘Your Health Is In Your Hands’, was launched yesterday will continue until October 19.
The event is supported by Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) Fitness Centre, Aewon Garment Sdn Bhd and ADN MMA Fitness and groups of generous volunteers.
The Breast Cancer Awareness is commemorated globally during the month of October with the aims of raising attention and support for the awareness of the disease, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of the affected.
The campaign was officiated by the guest of honour, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr Hajah Rahmah binti Haji Mohd Said.
In her opening speech, the Co-Chairperson of the Cancer Awareness Campaign, Dr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Md Kassim, said non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, coronary heart problems and diabetes are the leading causes of deaths not only at the global level but also in Brunei Darussalam.
Cancer, however, is the only top cause of death. Women in the Sultanate are often being diagnosed with several deathly cancers affecting breast, uterus, cervical, ovary and lungs.
Although breast and uterus cancer can be detected and cured at an early stage, she urged that it is vital for all women irrespective of their age to understand and be aware of the breast cancer risk factors and methods in preventing it so that it would help decrease the fatality rate.
She added that the chosen theme for this year’s awareness campaign is aimed at raising the alarm and reminding the women in the country to know their roles and responsibilities in learning the risks of breast cancer and conducting breast self-examination in addition to practising a healthy lifestyle.
“At the same time, PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences is also conducting related research on breast cancer including finding out the knowledge of the public on breast cancer as well as assessing and reviewing the effectiveness of the campaign and whether their outreach programme meets its objectives.”
The event continued with the launching of the campaign by the guest of honour.
There was also a short video clips competition for secondary schools on ‘Promotion of Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention’.
The first prize went to Sayyidina Husain Secondary School, while the second and third prizes were won by Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School respectively.
Prizes for the video contest were sponsored by Laneige Brunei Darussalam.
Among the activities arranged for the five-day campaign include health check, exhibition on breast cancer and related information, Breast Self-Examination (BSE) demonstration, various fitness games and health quiz.
T-shirts for the campaign are also available for sale and the proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Research Cluster, Universiti Brunei Darussalam in assisting their research projects.
Five booths are also set up for the campaign by the Health Promotion Centre, Research Cluster, Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) Fitness Centre, ADN MMA Fitness and Aewon Garment Sdn Bhd.
