KG SENGKURONG ‘B’ Consultative Council (MPK) held its first meeting to discuss efforts to strengthen the village economy through the ‘One Village, One Product’ programme, as well as ways to tackle social ills in the village.
Kelupis, a local delicacy, has been identified as the main product for the village as it has the potential to be expanded profitably. Members hoped that this product could take off soon.
The meeting also discussed the various social ills hitting the village, such as cleanliness issues at Pasar Tani in Kg Sengkurong as well as issues regarding village youth.
Issues regarding cleanliness and comfort of the market include smoking habits of workers who indiscriminately dispose their cigarette butts. The members hoped that the matter could be tackled with the involvement of the enforcement agencies.
The members also agreed to tackle the problem of children loitering around the village, which has been identified as being caused by family problems, including parents’ lack of responsibility towards their children’s welfare, education and safety. Although they have received assistance from the government, members of the village consultative council ensured that such issues and concerns will be tackled. The establishment of neighbourhood crime watch programmewas also touched on and the members welcomed the government’s moves to set up of the programme.
