BUSIIDO Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ) returned home with 10 gold medals, 15 silver and seven bronze from the annual BJJ and Submission Grappling Headhunters Challenge at City Mall in Kota Kinabalu.
Danny Gapar, Assistant Head Coach of Busiido BJJ, said half of the team members were first time competitors and that it was the first time they sent youngsters and females to compete.
“They did pretty well. We started training three months ahead … a lot of hard work was put into this.
“Some had to shed some weight, and some had to improve on their technique.
“BJJ is all about technique – the more strength you use, the faster you tire out, and that’s where technique comes in”, he said.
“We’ve all come together like a family, encouraging each other and having each other’s back.
“We, the coaches, are so proud of everyone – how they performed and how they took care of themselves.”
As for next year’s preparations, Danny pointed out that it would be tougher, considering that the Headhunters Challenge will be held again in August, the month after Ramadhan.
He hoped that the team would be prepared and motivated then.
“Raya will be the time when everyone has to watch their diet and fitness.
“We are still going to conduct classes six to seven days a week, about two to three months before the competition,” he added.
Those interested in the classes can contact Busiido BJJ through its Facebook page “Brunei BJJ” or Instagram @busiidobjj.
