NEW YORK (dpa) – Osama Bin Laden’s son-in-law, Suleiman Abu Ghaith, was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for conspiring to kill US citizens, providing support to al-Qaeda and conspiring to provide support to the terrorist network.
Abu Ghaith, 48, is the highest-ranking mem-ber of al-Qaeda to be tried on US soil since the September 11, 2001, suicide hijackings. He was captured in Jordan last year.
“Justice has been served,” said Attorney General Eric Holder. “This outcome ensures that Suleiman Abu Ghaith, a senior member of al-Qaeda and an associate of Osama Bin Laden, will never again set foot outside a prison cell.”
He was found guilty by 12 jurors in March following a three-week trial in a federal court-house just blocks from where the World Trade Center’s twin towers stood before being felled
in the 9/11 attacks.
“As the face and voice of al-Qaeda in the days and weeks after the 9/11 attacks, Abu Ghaith conspired with Osama Bin Laden and others and announced to the world al-Qaeda’s deadly intentions to continue to attack America,” said Assistant Attorney General John Carlin. “For his role… Abu Ghaith will now spend the rest of his life in prison.”
