THE Malayali Association recently organised the Onam celebration at Pusat Insani in Seria. Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by all Malayalees worldwide regardless of religion.
The event saw the attendance of over 500 individuals. The guest of honour was the High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam, Dr Ashok Kumar Amrohi. His wife, Yamini Amrohi also attended the event. Also present was Penghulu of Mukim Seria, Awang Haji Jamil bin Haji Linap.
The Malayali community has been celebrating Onam in the Belait District for the past 16 years, and this was the first time to be hosted by the Malayali Association after its establishment last year.
The event began with a Doa recitation and singing of the National Anthem of Brunei. Dr Ashok Kumar Amrohi then officiated the event. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of complying with the rules of the Sultanate for the peace and solidarity of the nation. He also lauded the efforts of Malayali Association in working closely with the local community.
There was also a traditional house designed as a photo booth with traditional Kerala floral decoration, which attracted a lot of non-Malayalee visitors. Malayali women dressed in their traditional outfits performed on stage
The highlight of the event was a vegetarian dinner served on banana leaves consisting of a spread of Kerala dishes. The event concluded with the singing of National Anthem of India.
