THE Brunei Darussalam Amateur Softball and Baseball Association (BASBA) set up the backstop of the proposed field for softball at the Jalan 99 Lambak Kanan Housing Scheme in Berakas yesterday morning.
Secretary General of BASBA, Major (R) Wan Md Tambrin bin Hj Suhaili, said the association was trying its best to make the pitch playable while waiting for the stadium to be built for the 2019 SEA Games.
“This field is for everyone in the association. It is also for softball development.
“When we have a functional softball field, we will be able to develop the sport through students from schools, colleges and higher education, including their teachers.” he added.
Secretary of Softball for BASBA, Jamil @ Muda Hj Ahmad, called for more assistance from everyone, including the government and private sectors, to build and improve the field.
“Only the backstop was set up today. We will continue to do more work here with the fences, pitch and maybe a make-shift stand for the spectators.
“I hope more of the teams’ representatives will come forward and assist us in building the field.”
“All of us will able to hold tournaments here and bring back the glory of both sports to the country,” he added.
A member of Pasadena Softball Club, Dk Rohhayati binti Pg Hj Hassan, said getting the long-awaited field gave hope for the sport to survive as more youngsters could now join in.
“We would have young players joining and learning softball. However, without a proper field for tournaments, we would start losing them.
“We need more new bloods as we prepare for the 2019 SEA Games in Brunei.
“We do hope that we can have the stadium earlier so that we can hold trials and host regional and international tournaments.”
