THE third unified Southeast Asia 5-A-Side Football Tournament will be hosted by Brunei Darussalam at the SOAS College Sports Complex on November 2-5, and will also be joined by Indonesia, Thailand, Sarawak as well as Labuan.
According to Lt Col (Rtd) Pg Hj Rambli Bin Pg Hj Bunut, chairperson of the organising committee, the word ‘unified’ meant “a combination of ordinary people playing with the intellectually-disabled”.
They will be trained as a team, he said, adding that the team will be made up of two people with three intellectually-disabled individuals.
The uniqueness of this tournament is that only the intellectually-disabled players can score the goals.
Lt Col (Rtd) Pg Hj Rambli explained that the purpose of the tournament is to provide opportunities for the intellectually-disabled individuals to develop.
Meanwhile, Hj Mahrub Bin Hj Murni, President of SOBD, added, “We want the intellectually-disabled individuals to be socially inclusive and develop their passion for sports as well as their confidence. It is also hoped that the tournament will foster friendship amongst the athletes.”
Hj Mahrub revealed that a health screening will be conducted for the athletes at the Health Promotion Centre on Sunday.
The opening ceremony for the tournament will be held on Sunday afternoon and the general public are welcomed to watch and give their support.
