THE new Audi S3 Sedan is far more appealing than on paper and of course to get behind the wheels is even tempting enough even just for a short test drive, particularly knowing that the S3 sprints from 0 to 100km/h (62.1 mph) at just 4.9 seconds.
Driving the S3 feels insanely fast, and the specified 4.9-second sprint to 100km/hr leads to believe with the 6-speed S tronic always on the ball, be prepared to dole out the next gear in mere milliseconds. Its 2.0 TFSI engine produces 210 kW (285 hp) and 380 Nm (280.3 lb-ft) of torque.
The swell of power is fabulous and passing or accelerating is a joyous experience. I particularly enjoyed the sound that emanates from the sonorous-sounding 4-cylinder turbocharged engine offering superior performance and groundbreaking efficiency.
This high-performance 4-cylinder unit combines cutting-edge technologies – dual injection into the combustion chambers and into the induction manifold.
The integration of the exhaust manifold in the cylinder head enhances the Audi valvelift system and the rotary valve module for the thermal management system.
The engine gives it a combined fuel consumption of just 6.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 159 grams per kilometre (255.9 g/mi). The newly developed multi-plate clutch in the quattro drive train manages the flow of power to the front and rear wheels.
The high power with ample features and a high degree of everyday practicality are strengths that come together in the Audi S3 Sedan with quattro permanent all-wheel drive.
A key factor in the dynamic performance of the premium compact model is its lightweight construction, which by far the best figure in its class, with an unladen weight of just 1,430kg.
The S-sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 25 millimetres and large brakes are mounted behind the 18-inch wheels and the Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) intervenes with fine sensitivity.
Control of the wheels were no less an excitement as accelerating the S3 with the new progressive steering with power assist that varies the steering ratio. The progressive steering accentuates dynamism and sportiness.
It is somewhat more indirect around the centre position and very direct when steering sharply, as at the turn of the wheel, it grips and holds the road with serious aplomb. The 5-mode Audi Drive Select on the other hand is standard, with Audi magnetic ride available as an option.
Audi S3 Saloon also boasts a wealth of S-specific design details, and this again exceeds the pronounced sportiness of the Audi A3 Saloon, which includes the rear spoiler on the luggage compartment lid, the rear diffuser, the dual-branch exhaust system with oval twin tailpipes and exterior mirrors in aluminium look.
High-grade materials and first-class workmanship in the interior are testimony to the superb quality of an Audi S model, while the optional S sport seats also convey an exceedingly sporty aura.
Before jumping in the driver’s seat, little did I know that a quietly-styled car could have such a loud, fun personality and having said this, the S3 isn’t the fastest or craziest car in the world, but it would be the perfect car for those who desire a sports car with fun personality.
