A NON-governmental organis-ation in Brunei has taken the initiative to bring cheer to the children of Ward 2 at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital. Headed by Dawn Lee, manager of La Vida, volunteers came to visit children at Ward 2 yesterday and organised an arts and crafts activity. According to Dawn, the objective of the activity was to bring cheer to children going through stressful times in facing health and physical challenges in the hospital while undergoing short or long term treatment at the ward.
The volunteers of La Vida would come on certain days of the week and organise activities for the patients at the playroom area. The volunteers would also go to patients who are unable to move from their beds due to immobility and spend some time with them either by just chatting or engaging in simple activities.
This activity was lauded by one of the patient’s mothers whose son was admitted for asthma. “I commend this activity conducted by La Vida as it can be stressful for the children who are admitted at the ward. Parents can also bond with their children by doing the arts and crafts activity together. Today, son and I both made a jellyfish from a paper plate and colourful streamers,” she said.
One of the volunteers, Ming, a student from Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah in Gadong, said she joined La Vida because she wants to give back to the community by helping children at the hospital. “I enjoy spending my school holidays with these children rather than wasting my time doing unnecessary things,” she said.
