DENGKIL (Bernama) – The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has spent RM3 million to provide essential items to flood victims in 51 affected districts.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (Bernama photo) said the 450 tonnes of necessities distributed since Dec 26 included rice, cooking oil, sugar, flour and canned food.
He said distribution of the goods was made by 5,000 volunteers from the ministry with the cooperation of the Parliamentary Agriculture Consultative Council and local community leaders.
“Such aid will continue even after the flood waters have subsided,” he said at a news conference after visiting the goods collection centre at the Fama Operations Centre.
On damage caused by the floods, Ismail Sabri said the rough estimate of losses suffered by farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen was RM100 million but the actual amount might be known after this Wednesday.
He also corrected newspaper reports saying that farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen needed to submit police reports on being victims of floods in making claims or applying for loans from the relevant agencies.
“The newspaper reports are inaccurate….actually, it’s enough for them to obtain confirmation from officers of the agencies under the ministry.
“Previously, there might have been such a procedure but after this massive flooding, the ministry would not make it difficult for the victims to make claims by having to report on the damages suffered to the police first.”
