SOME 400 people gathered at the Dewan Persidangan in Kuala Belait yesterday for the Anthony Abell College (AAC) Reunion Night 2015.
The guest of honour at the event was the Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, in his capacity as the former principal of the college from 1978-1982.
Students currently enrolled at the college as well as invited guests comprising former students, teachers and administrative staff, enlivened the gathering by singing the national anthem and the AAC song as well as holding poetry recitals.
Chairman of the Event Management Committee of Former Students, Shaikh Haji Hanafiah Shaikh Haji Ahmad, expressed his joy at the positive turnout during his welcoming speech.
“The main objective of the event is to provide the opportunity for previous students and teachers of AAC to indulge in nostalgia of the past as well as reconnect and mingle with friends and former schoolmates from different batches.”
Pengiran Noralim bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad, Secretary of the Managing Committee, explained to the Bulletin that the event was supposed to be exclusively for the 1970-1977 intake but due to an overwhelming interest displayed by students from intakes from the 1980s and 1990s, they decided to host a bigger event.
“The event took us one year to plan and Alhamdulillah, the turnout was more than expected with about 200 tickets sold.
“Some of the former students also donated to the school and Insya Allah, some of the proceeds from the sales will also be used to donate to the school.”
He added that the amount garnered from sales added up to around $6,000.
The Acting Principal, Halizawati binti Haji Kepli, presented the proceeds to the Minister of Development, who accepted it on behalf of the former students.
The colourful event also saw the attendance of several former students who currently live abroad in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.
