A 26-YEAR-OLD Bruneian Chinese man was fined $6,000 or to serve six months in jail in default after the Magistrate accepted the defendant’s guilty plea and considered punishment overnight for an offence of illegal possession of just under 100 smartphones. Zhang Jianqun paid the fine.
Customs and AITI agents conducted an inspection at a mobile shop called LARA Corp Enterprise at The Airport Mall in Berakas at about 3.45pm on September 29.
The defendant, Managing Director of Qina Enterprise Sdn Bhd who has also run LARA Corp Enterprise for the past two years, was present at the shop when officers found 21 units of iPhones, 20 units of other mobile phones of various types and another box containing 54 units of various mobile phones.
During the investigation, the defendant said that he bought the undeclared smartphones from Syau Trading Company.
The Magistrate’s Court yesterday also ordered the forfeiture of the phones to the government.
