THE Asean senior sports representatives have agreed to form an expert group to help create a five-year sports sector work plan 2016-2020 for the Asean sports development cooperation.
The agreement was made during the 4th Asean Senior Sports Officers Meeting (SOMS-4) in Hanoi, Vietnam, which was chaired by Associate Professor Dr Sisamone Sithirajvongsa, Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning and International Cooperation, the Lao Democratic Republic.
Following the Blueprint Roadmap 2011-2015 for the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) that will end in 2015, SOMS-4 has agreed to create a five-year sports sector work plan for the 2016-2020 period.
Towards this objective, SOMS-4 has also agreed to establish an Asean Experts Group Meeting on Sports (EGMS) to assist SOMS in crafting the sports sector work plan that will be brought to the 3rd Asean Sports Ministers Meeting (AMMS-3) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in August 2015.
Brunei also informed SOMS-4 about the 1st Asean Youth Sports Camp, held from November 25 to 29 last year, and the 5th Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT), held from August 9 to 23 this year, which were both hosted by the Sultanate as work plans.
SOMS-4 was told that the HBT had not only succeeded in hosting a regional football tournament but also in creating solidarity and understanding amongst Asean youths in tandem with the world sporting agenda of ‘Sports for Peace and Development’.
It is also in line with the ASCC’s strategic objectives in creating policies, strategies and related mechanisms to support regional cooperation in sports to contribute towards development, peace and stability.
Brunei’s delegation for the recent meeting was led by Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid bin Hj Mohd Jaafar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
The 5th SOMS and AMMS are scheduled to be held back-to-back in Malaysia next year.
