SOME 43 undergraduates of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday underwent a test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Brunei Darussalam and UBD’s Language Centre, and held at the latter venue.
Thirty-four undergraduates sat for TOPIK 1 beginners’ level, while nine tested for TOPIK 2 intermediate and advanced level.
According to Yoon Yeo Hee, a Korean Language Lecturer, the level of interest in learning the Korean language is very encouraging among the undergraduates and it keeps on increasing from time to time.
The aim of TOPIK is to test undergraduates on their Korean language skills and proficiency for foreigners or overseas Koreans whose mother tongue is not the Korean language. It is divided into two levels – TOPIK 1 (beginners’ level) and TOPIK 2 (Intermediate and advanced level). Furthermore, it also helps check one’s understanding of Korean cultures and intercultural competence.
The result of the examination is beneficial for people applying to Korean university and employment purposes as well as acquisition of permanent residency in Korea.
TOPIK has been annually held in Brunei since 2011. The number of participants in Brunei has increased from last year’s 31 individuals to 43 this year. TOPIK will be held again in March 2015 at UDB.
Witnessing the examination yesterday was officials from the embassy.
