HANOI (Bernama) – Nearly 40,000 Vietnamese have registered to donate their corneas, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reports citing the Eye Bank of Vietnam.
The eye bank in collaboration with the National Optical Hospital held a ceremony in Hanoi recently to honour 37 cornea donors and celebrate the bank’s 5th anniversary.
The event is organised every year since 2007 after a local in northern Ninh Binh province donated his corneas following his death.
A total of 36 organisations and individuals along with donation campaigns received recognition for their contribution to the eye bank.
The bank was launched in May 2009 and has received 461 corneas from 235 donors.
More than 30,000 vision-impaired people are in need of cornea transplants in the country.
