TAWAU (Bernama) – Three hundred and ninety-five fishermen in Tawau and Kalabakan were paid a subsistence allowance of RM200 each for the first month this year.
The allowance was presented by Sebatik state assemblyman Datuk Abdul Muis Picho in a ceremony at the Tawau Fishermen Association office.
Abdul Muis in his speech, said the distribution of assistance showed the government did not marginalise the fishermen.
“Apart from the subsistence allowance, the government through the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) as well as other agencies are planning to assist the group, especially fishermen who are registered and eligible,” he said.
Abdul Muis said among the types of assistance provided were fuel aid subsidy and fishing boat and equipment assistance.
In this regard, he hoped the assistance provided by the government would help raise the economic capacity of the fishermen and their families.
He also called on fishermen to support the government plans to develop the fishing industry to ensure the various programmes were implemented smoothly.
