THE Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday imposed a fine of $27,000 or to serve nine months imprisonment in default on a 26-year-old Indian national who pleaded guilty to being in possession of smuggled cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.
Devanraj Rajagopalan, holder of a social visitor’s pass, was met at his home in Kg Pulaie by Customs Preventive officers at about 2pm on Nov 17 for an inspection.
Agents found 63 cartons and 26 packets of cigarettes as well as 24 cans of beer and 19 bottles of liquor hidden in and around the defendant’s home.
He failed to produce any declaration forms.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana Hj Abd Rahman ordered for the smuggled goods to be forfeited to the state and destroyed.
