A 21-YEAR-OLD local man became the latest road fatality in Brunei Darussalam after he was involved in a self-accident in the early hours of yesterday near the Damuan Recreational Park close to the cemetery, the police said.
The Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council and police said this brought the number of fatalities to 18 so far this year from 16 accidents.
The saloon car of the youth caught fire in the mishap which happened at around 5.30am. The Central Police Station received a distress call at 5.36am. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Friends of the victim said he was a bright student while he was at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
The police have advised motorists to drive with extra care especially at places that are not well- lit. The Brunei Darussalam National Road Safety Council also urged motorists to be cautious and responsible while on the road and to be careful, disciplined, considerate and adhere to road rules and regulations for the safety of all.
The Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council yesterday conducted Hajat prayers, Ratib Al-Attas and Tahlil for road victims at Suri Seri Begawan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque in Kg Manggis.
It was to seek blessings from Allah the Almighty to safeguard the nation especially road users and to seek protection and enhance awareness on road safety. The religious gathering was the third of its kind held this year which was conducted by the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council and Land Transport Department.
It was also to answer calls from the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to make Brunei a Zikir Nation.
The chief guest was the Minister of Communications cum Adviser of the Brunei Darussalam National Road Safety Council, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
Also present were Awg Mohd Riza bin Dato Paduka Awg Hj Mohd Yunos, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Dr Hj Supry bin Hj Ladi, Acting Director of Land Transport as the Deputy Chairperson II of the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council, heads of department, deputies, senior officers at the ministry and members of the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council.
