The 14th Congress of the Federation of Asian Photographic Art (FAPA) was held for three days from November 24–26, 1994 at the International Convention Centre in Berakas. The congress was launched by HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, Patron of the Brunei Photographic Society (PFNBD).
The congress gathered more than 300 photographers from the 10 Asean member states including Brunei Darussalam; the Far East’s China, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan; Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand; and the neighbouring states’ Sabah, Sarawak, Miri and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
On the second day of the congress, HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah joined Group A of the congress, where they visited Kampong Ayer and stopped at the residence of Penghulu of Kg Tamoi, Pengarah Haji Mokti bin Mohd Salleh to watch a cultural performance. Also present accompanying the group was the then-Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Hussain bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Mohd Yusof.
All local and overseas participants and photographers took the opportunity to capture the beautiful scenery at Kampong Ayer. Meanwhile, Group B participants were brought to visit Ulu Belait’s long house and witnessed a traditional performance from the Iban tribe wearing their traditional attire. The photographers were in awe of the sights and sounds of the rural area as it was surrounded by the lush green forest.
During the last day, group leaders attended a meeting at River View Hotel in Gadong to discuss the next country that would play host for the congress. The event was officially closed by Haji Kamaluddin bin PDP Haji Abu Bakar, the Deputy President of the Photographic Society in Brunei Darussalam.
