THE Fourth National Primary School Sports Festival (4th NPSSF), which is scheduled to be held from October 23 to November 9, will be participated by more than one thousand pupils from both government and private primary schools across the nation.
The Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education announced this during a media conference yesterday.
The media event was chaired by the Acting Assistant Director of the department, Awang Roslin bin Haji Suhailee. A briefing on the event was presented by the Assistant Head of Physical Unit, Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Awang Haji Puteh bin Haji Timbang.
Awang Roslin said the biennial nationwide sporting event for primary schools hopes to produce healthy and active pupils be it physically, mentally or discipline-wise.
The sports meet also aims to encourage and support the pupils’ participation and interest in the field of sports, he added.
Furthermore, the event is also aimed to enhance cooperation among officers at the department as well as primary school teachers and other agencies beyond the Ministry of Education.
The opening ceremony for the 4th NPSSF is scheduled to take place at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas. There will also be a mini marathon.
Hj Puteh explained that there will be nine sports categories including chess, ping pong, futsal, badminton, football, netball, sepak takraw and athletics.
The young athletes will be divided into nine divisions according to their areas – namely Brunei I, Brunei IIA, Brunei IIB, Brunei III, Brunei IV, Tutong I, Tutong II, Belait and Temburong.
Unlike previous years, the 4th NPSSF will also be inviting special needs pupils to participate in the special categories in accordance with their physical abilities namely 100 metres for boys and girls, 200 metres for boys and girls and 50 metres X 4.
Thirty-nine gold medals are up for grabs at the sports meet.
On October 23, chess contest will be held at Dato Basir Primary School Hall while ping pong will take place on October 28 at Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Multi-purpose Hall.
The mini marathon is scheduled to be held on November 3 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium at 7.15am and futsal is on November 4 at SHHB Multi-purpose Hall at 9.20am.
As for badminton, the venue will be the Sports School Hall at 2.15pm, while netball will be on November 5 at SHHB Multi-purpose Hall and on the same day sepak takraw will take place at Menglait Sports Complex at 3pm.
On November 11, football tournament will be held at SHHB Track and Fields at 9am.
Athletics will be held on the closing ceremony day on November 9 at 2pm.
